Dunes Village Resort Review

By Danielle Leshin

The Dunes Village Resort has been rated #1Best Family Hotel in Myrtle Beach and #2 Best Family Hotel in the US by Travelers’ Choice.  I can see why, our vacation exceeded my expectations. From the West coast to the East coast, we have been on many many beach vacations and the Dunes Village was by far the best and most affordable beach vacation we have ever been on.

We arrived at the resort a little after 1 pm. Check in wasn’t until 4 pm, but they offered a pre-check in and gave us our bracelets and info on the resort. We were welcome to use the pools, water parks, game rooms, volleyball and join the childrens activities, until our room was ready. They took my cell number and called us as soon as the room was ready. Keep in mind, there was no place to store your luggage, so you will have to keep it in the car.

The parking is just across the street from the towers. It's the building on the left in this photo. The street you have to cross is small and not very busy, so it wasn’t a big deal.

They do offer valet parking for $12 per day, which did not fit into our budget, so we did not use the valet service.

Check In

They called us to tell us the room was ready at 3 pm, keep in mind, check in is not until 4 pm. The front desk staff were friendly and accommodating. They gave us a map, a list of the children’s activities and an envelope full of coupons for the Myrtle Beach area. Go through these coupons before you hit the town, there are some great coupons. We were given instructions to our elevator and were able to unload our luggage by the front desk and then move our car to the parking lot across the street. Easy check in, and there was only 1 person in line in front of us.**Make sure you go to the right tower for check in. There are 2 towers, the Palm and the Palmetto. **

       The Room

We booked a 3 Bedroom Deluxe Ocean view, at the Dunes Village Resort and were given the Penthouse floor! What a great surprise.

We went up to the room and were in awe.

The living room was huge and had 2 walls of glass windows and a very large wrap around balcony.

The views were breathtaking! There were 3 bedrooms, 2 had private balconies, 3 bathrooms, full kitchen, washer/dryer, granite counter tops and a fantastic view.

The website pictures do not do the view justice. The room more than met our expectations. It was clean and well stocked.

The cleaning people were great and came every day before lunch, except 1 day when they came when we were out for dinner. I was told they had a lot of check outs that day.

Palms & Palmetto Towers

The back of the Palms Tower from the beach

Palms Tower

The Palms Tower is where the indoor water park for older kids is located as well as the heated outdoor pool and the Admirals Room restaurant where breakfast is served.

People rave about the breakfast buffet, so you have to try it at least once!

They also have the Cabana Tiki Bar outside near the pool. The cocktails are delish and worth the money.

The Resort consists of two towers, the Palms Tower and the Palmetto Tower.

You have to walk across a small 2 lane parking lot to get back and forth from each tower; it only took a second and was no big deal, but bring shoes as the parking lot can get hot!

Palmetto Tower

The Palmetto Tower is where the Game Room and the water park for younger kids is located. The Captains Café restaurant and the New Starbucks coffee shop is also located in this tower. The outdoor pool at the Palmetto Tower is NOT heated.

Wear Your Swimsuit

I made sure to dress the kids in their swim suits & cover ups the morning of our arrival. This way we could use the water parks, pools and go right to the beach. I also packed a small beach bag with sun tan lotion and a couple of towels.

Dunes Village Water parks

The indoor water parks at the Dunes Village Resort were fantastic! They were open until 11pm every day. My kids enjoyed both parks equally. There were a lot of people in the parks on the weekend, some did not have wristbands and we saw security kick them out. The parks had a lot of chlorine, the kids eyes were red each time they went to the parks, but it did not stop them from wanting to go back and having fun.

The Dunes Village Resort game room was located inside the water park in the Palmetto Tower. We never had to wait long to use the pool tables or ping pong tables.

Kids & Family Activities

The Dunes Village Resort activities included, volleyball-free, water balloon toss-free, paint a shell-$1-5, parachute party-free, make a bead necklace-$3, face painting-free, paint a box-$3, mini golf tournament-free, basketball shooting contest-free, color a mask-$2, duck races-free, decorate a bucket-$5, hair braiding-free, hula hoop contest-free, family fun fotos-free, noodle relay-free.

Monday night was Dive in Movie night by the pool, also free. We did not get  chance to go to the Dive in movie, next visit, it will be on the top of our list. A few of the kids in our group participated in a "paint a treasure box" for $3. The activity was well organized and the kids enjoyed painting a keepsake box. As you can see, there are plenty of FREE fun activities to keep the kids busy.

We decided to hit the Captains Café restaurant for lunch; it is located in the Palmetto Tower. We were seated quickly and able to get 3 tables for our large party outside on the deck overlooking the pool and the ocean.

The best view in the house!

The food at the Captains Café was fantastic and the portions were huge.

My 10 year old son and I split the Philly steak sandwich, it was delicious and neither of us were able to finish our portions.

Oceanfront Dining at the Captains Cafe

The rest of the crew enjoyed their lunch as well. The Pina Colada $7 and the Huge Bucket Punch Drink $12 were worth the price. The sandwiches around $10 and burgers $12 were well worth it. The kid’s meals were around $5 each and came with a drink.

Dinner at The
Captains Cafe

The kids liked the Captains Cafe so much; we decided to go back for dinner! If you go for dinner, expect to wait a little while. Seating is limited; you can always try to make reservations.

The Dinner menu was almost the same as the Lunch menu, I ordered the fish and chips $17, a little pricey I thought until I received my dinner, and again the portions were huge! 2 adults could easily split the fish and chips, which also came with hush puppies and cole slaw.

We decided to splurge and ordered dessert. We ordered 2 desserts and split them between 4 people.

The key lime pie -$6 was very good and the huge Brownie Sundae -$5 was delicious !

Don't Forget the Beach Towels & Chairs

The Dunes Village Resort offers small white towels located inside both water parks. These towels are fine for the pool, but not nearly big enough to use on the beach.

So make sure to pack beach towels and a blanket or beach chairs for the beach.

They have chairs you can rent daily for $50 you get a clam shell and two chairs on the beach.

The Beach

Myrtle Beach South Carolina Beach View

The Beach at Dunes Village Resort

The Beach was beautiful !

It was clean, white soft sand. During low tide, the beach was huge, during high tide, we still had plenty of room for our beach chairs and sand castles.

The view was great & we could see all the way down to the boardwalk. At night, we could see the ferris wheel on the boardwalk lit up. The colors constantly changed, so it was always a beautiful site.

While we could see the boardwalk, it was still far away. We walked for a good 45 minutes down the beach one day and still never reached the boardwalk.

All in all, this is a fantastic resort and I would highly recommend a vacation to the Dunes Village Resort.
