Top 10 Tourist Attractions

By Danielle Leshin

These attractions were choosen based on visitors and if they would be fun for the entire family. I tried to keep out most national parks and theme parks, because we also have a top 10 lists for both of those topics as well.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial

13000 S Dakota 244  Keystone, SD 57751

(605) 574-2523

Over 3 million people each year visit this national memorial. Located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, nature abounds and beautiful views everywhere you look. Mount Rushmore took 14 years for the famous sculptor Gutzon Borglum to complete, from 1927-1941.

This top 10 tourist attraction is free to enter the park, but you will pay approximately $ 11 for parking and the parking pass is good for 24 hours. You will want to visit during the day for the best view, they also have a lighting ceremony in the evening that you won’t want to miss.

Statue of Liberty

Liberty Island, New York, NY 10004

(212) 363-3200

One of our favorite top 10 tourist attractions, the Statue of Liberty National Monument is located on Liberty Island in the New York Bay. This beautiful lady of liberty is only accessible from Statue Cruises.

You have to buy a ticket from Statue Cruises to get there and then you need another ticket if you want to go inside of the Statue of Liberty.

Keep in mind, the Crown tickets book up to 6 months in advance. So if you plan on seeing the inside, get your Crown ticket far in advance. Keep in mind, the crown is open, but now has limited access since hurricane Sandy.

If you plan on seeing more than one sight in NYC, get the New York CITYPASS, it will save you over 40% on tickets and admissions to NYC sights.

Niagara falls

Niagara Falls, NY

Niagara Falls Park is the oldest  state park in the US, dating back to 1885. These waterfalls have over 3160 tons of water flow over the falls every second! The park is over 400 acres and over 140 are under water.

This top 10 tourist attraction is like no other.  Be prepared to hear the thundering roar of the falls. There is no fee to see this magnificent sight, but you will have to pay for parking. Check out the “Journey Behind the falls” tour on the Canadian side and the “Maid of the Mist” boat tour you can catch on either side. They also have ghost tours at night.

There are plenty of hotels you can book with a view of the falls. For a great overall view, check out the Skylon Tower on the Canadian side.

Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village

20900 Oakwood Blvd., Dearborn, MI 48124

(800) 835-5237

At this top 10 tourist attraction, step into the museum and you will see such things as the Oscar Mayer Weiner mobile, John F. Kennedy’s limo, the Rosa Parks bus, Lincoln’s chair, an IMAX theater and so much more.

Greenfield Village is like taking a step back in time.  There are over 3 historic structures including Thomas Edison’s lab and the courthouse where Lincoln practiced law. The employees are dressed in proper era attire and are very knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you may have.

Take a ride in a Model T or ride in a 19th century authentic steam engine train.  There is no shortage of restaurants to eat at, all themed to feel like you have walked in the early 1800-1900’s.

Make sure to take a day each for the museum and Greenfield Village.

Colonial Michilimackinac is located in Mackinac State park on Mackinaw Island.

This fantastic  recreation of a 18th century trading village with costumed characters, cannon and gun demonstrations will keep you entertained for most of the day. They also have current live excavations going on during the day & beautiful views of the Straits of Mackinac.

The characters are well informed and are able to answer your questions and tell true stories. A very interesting look back at the 18th century.

 Times square

New York City, NY

Times Square is nicknamed “crossroads of the world”. Last year alone, over  30 million people per year visit.

Be aware, Times Square is a bit of a tourist trap, things are overpriced and people can be a bit dicey. It’s worth it for a once in a lifetime look, but be prepared to cover the kids eyes if the naked cowboy or painted lady come walking by.

If you don’t want to worry about covering your kids eyes, stop by at night when the lights are amazing and the people are not so bright, if you know what I mean. This top 10 tourist attraction is one of the most colorful on our list.

The Lost Sea Adventure

140 Lost Sea Rd.
Sweetwater, TN 37874

This place is cool!

First you start off on a walking cavern tour with cool sights like the Devils Hole,  and neat rock formations and rust formations.

The walking tour is about  1/3 mile and takes you down the cavern all the way to the underground Lost Sea. Once there, you board a glass bottom boat and they take you on a short boat tour. Keep an eye out for the white trout fish that have no eyes.

Don’t bother eating here, go up the road to the small town of Sweetwater and get a great meal and a fair price.

Lastly, get there early, or be prepared to wait for your tour.

Why did we add this little unknown underground lake to out top 10 tourist attractions list?  Because it's just plain cool, your kids will like it, it won't take much time to enjoy the great views and it won't cost you a ton of money. It's unique!

 The White House

1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW., Washington, DC 20500

Sadly, White House tours have stopped until further notice at this top 10 tourist attraction.

You can still walk around Pennsylvania Avenue and see the White House from the street, and take pictures.

You may however want to jump on a tour bus to see : The  U.S Capital, Lincoln Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery and Vietnam Veteran's Memorial.

Hopefully in the future, this great American monument will be shared with the public once again.
